If there is one type of fat that men and women struggle with equally it is belly fat. There are few things more unsightly than belly fat. Belly fat doesn't allow you to wear the clothes that you would like because they are to revealing. Belly fat causes the top of your pants to have have a permanent crease put in them. It means that you leave all of your shirts untucked. It is a good thing that this is the style today. Let's face it, belly fat is not attractive. I see people searching all over for how to get six packs abs but I don't see any people searching for how to gain belly fat. No one is scouring the internet to figure out how to get a rounded one pack ab.

Belly Fat Health Risk

But the aesthetics of belly fat are not the worst part. There is a very real health risk to carrying too much weight around your mid-section. There is an increased risk of heart disease among many other potential problems. My point of this article is not to list the many health problems with belly fat but you need to be aware that they exist and that they are real. You need to do something about it.

What causes belly fat? Well, part of the answer to this question is not all that difficult. In great part, it is related to the food that you throw down your gullet. Let's face it you didn't get 10 – 15 pounds of belly fat by eating correctly. However, diet is not the only reason we have excess belly fat and why we struggle to get rid of it. A big problem is your hormones: specifically a hormone called cortisol.

Cortisol Contributes to Belly Fat

Cortisol is often referred to as a “stress hormone.” When you are experiencing emotional or physical stress your body will produce this lovely hormone called cortisol. So now you have another reason for eliminating stress from your life. How do you combat stress? Well you could get rid of the things that cause stress but many times they are caused by your job or family members or close relationships. I do not recommend selling all of your possessions and breaking off all your relationships and becoming a hermit. So if you can't get rid of your job or your relationships then what are you to do?

One of the most effective way to combat the dreaded hormone cortisol is through resistance training. At first glance, that may seem like this is somewhat of a paradox. You are probably thinking to yourself, “I thought you just said physical stress can lead to the production of cortisol.” In part, you are correct if you are referring to the endless cardio sessions that people often perform in the gym. However, shorter duration workouts that bring the intensity are just what the doctor order to combat cortisol.

Exercise Program to Eliminate Belly Fat

If you are looking for an exercise program that can combat the effects of cortisol and begin to eliminate the belly fat that you see in the mirror every day then you may want to consider looking into a program developed by John Romaniello. He runs a high profile gym in New York and works with numerous celebrities and athletes who can't afford belly fat. He has put together a program called Final Phase Fat Loss. It is a good product that can help you reach your fat loss goals.

But if you are not willing to work hard or if you think you can get rid of your belly fat on your own then knock yourself out. Make sure your workouts included intense workout sessions of shorter duration and don't simply go into the local gym and hop on the treadmill for 45 minutes and think that you have had a great fat burning session. You will be disappointed in the end. Make sure that you work resistance training into your program in such a way that you produce a tremendous cardio workout. If you do, you could be well on your way to eliminating the belly fat that you have grown to hate.
